'Malkangiri encounter to benefit bauxite mining'
Hyderabad, Dec 25, 2016, DHNS:
Activist says 31 Maoists, 17 tribals were killed by the police

The encounter near Malkangiri on the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border in which 31 Maoists, including two top guns, and 17 tribal people were killed was to facilitate bauxite mining in the area, claimed Varavara Rao, civil liberty leader and emissary of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-M).
Rao said the police massacred 31 Maoists on October 28. Speaking to the mediahere on Saturday, Rao argued that it was the police who fired at the Maoists that day, which led to the death of the body guard of central committee secretary Akkiraju Haragopal alias Ramakrishna (RK).
He said that the police have not filed an FIR so far in the case. “It is unfortunate that the police, who according to the IPC have to file a FIR whenever there is an unnatural death, have not done so even after the death of 39 people. A five-member bench of the high court also gave directions in this regard. We have also approached the high court in this case,” Rao said.
“If we don’t get justice, we will approach the Supreme Court,” he added.Rao said that civil liberty groups filed private cases in the Karamchedu and Chunduru Dalit massacre cases in Andhra Pradesh and that option is still open for them.
Meanwhile, several cultural organisations, including Praja Kala Mandali, Dalita Kala Mandali , around 50 writers, singers and balladeers joined in a commemoration ceremony remembering singer-turned- Maoist P K M Prabhakar who was killed in the Malkangiri encounter.
“He was an engineer who was disillusioned by the TRS governance in Telangana and joined the Maoist to serve tribals two years ago,” Rao said.
