One person was killed and 10 others injured in a pile-up involving a dozen vehicles on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida due to dense fog on Saturday.

Due to low visibility, a car rammed into a tractor-trolley, leading to the accident that involved 12 vehicles. Visibility in the region was poor, and was caused by dense fog, which also disrupted air, rail and road traffic in northern parts of the country, though minimum temperature rose in the region.

Dense to very dense fog occurred at some places in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Shallow to moderate fog occurred at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Bihar, western Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, the Met department said.

Dense fog was found in the early hours of the day in New Delhi, which affected the movement of rail traffic leading to a delay in the schedule of 84 trains and rescheduling of 37 others. The highest temperature in the city stood at 24.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above average, while the lowest was pegged at 8 degrees, which is normal for this time of the year.

Intense cold wave sweeping the hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh continued unabated on Saturday with minimum temperatures hovering around freezing point at several places in the state.

The high-altitude tribal areas reeled under severe cold wave conditions with mercury staying between minus 5 degrees Celsius and minus 12 degrees Celsius, while Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti recorded a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, the local MeT Department said.

The Kashmir Valley continued to reel under severe cold though the night temperature across the state saw a slight improvement on Saturday.

A Met official said the minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 4.4 degrees Celsius on Friday night — 1.1 degrees higher than Thursday night’s minus 5.5 degrees.

Night temperature in Leh town in the cold desert region of Ladakh saw a considerable improvement as mercury settled there at minus 1.5 degrees Celsius on Friday against Thursday night’s minus 8.2 degrees, he said.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath yatra, witnessed a minimum of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius on Friday against the previous night’s minus 4.8. The mercury in the skiresort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus two degrees Celsius on Friday, against Thursday night’s 2.2 degrees.

In Punjab and Haryana, road and rail traffic remained disrupted due to the dense fog, though the minimum temperature in the region rose. Narnaul in Haryana was the coldest place in the state with a low of 4.5 degrees Celsius, one notch below normal.

Amritsar’s minimum was 8 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal, while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their minimums at 5.3 and 7.4 degrees Celsius respectively. Chandigarh had a low of 9.2 degree Celsius, three degrees above normal.
