The Centre’s move to switch over to digital mode of payment to achieve the objectives of the demonetisation of notes has come under the scrutiny of a parliamentary panel.

The standing committee on information and technology headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur has taken up the issue to ascertain, among other things, how secure and able the e-platform is for handling large volume of money transactions.

The parliamentary panel has called representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to brief its members on ‘Digital Payments and Online Security of Data’ on January 5.

The committee members said they wanted to scrutinise whether the government’s move to switch over to cashless economy was secure as online thefts have also reportedly gone up since the November 8 announcement.

The panel will also inspect whether the banking infrastructure is not vulnerable to sabotage since multi-national companies are also players in the digital sector. Cyber experts believe that moving over to e-wallet payments will not be easy since 98% of cash is in circulation.
