Jat group in SC with caveat on quota

New Delhi: Apr 2, 2016, DHNS
A Jat community group on Friday approached the Supreme Court to preempt any order on challenge to the Haryana government's fresh move to provide them reservation.

All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) filed caveat in the court for opportunity of hearing, following a statement issued by Raj Kumar Saini, BJP MP from Kurukshetra that he would challenge the decision to grant quota benefits to the community.

AIJASS President Hawa Singh Sangwan cited to the recent purported statement of Saini and sought opportunity of hearing before passing any order by the apex court. A Bill to provide reservation to Jats and five other communities in government jobs and educational institutions was unanimously passed by the Haryana Assembly on March 29, ahead of the April 3 deadline set by the community which had launched a violent quota agitation in February.

Meeting a key demand of the community, the measure envisages reservation to Jats and five other castes — Jat Sikhs, Rors, Bishnois, Tyagis and Mulla Jat/Muslim Jat — by constituting a new classification Block ‘C’ in the Backward Classes category. It proposes to give 10 % reservation to Jats and five other castes in government and government-aided educational institutions and Class III and IV government jobs.
