The Puttingal Devi temple in Paravur in Kollam district reopened for darshan early on Sunday.

The temple reopened a week after explosions during a firework display at the temple killed 108 people and injured more than 300.

Head priest Unnikrishnan Namboothiri opened the sanctum sanctorum at about 4.30 am and performed customary rituals. The temple was reopened following a customary week-long break after the meena bharani festival ended. The police have detained all major functionaries of the temple management committee in connection with the incident.

On April 10, part of a misfired cracker triggered a chain of explosions at the fire-cracker storehouse, reducing the concrete building to rubble. The Kollam district administration and the local police are still at loggerheads over the festival organisers’ defiance of a ban on competitive fireworks. The state police chief T P Senkumar has also triggered a fresh row by stating that he had opposed visits of VVIPs including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi on the day of the accident, citing security issues and possible hindrances to rescue operations.
