RSS: Replace colonial robes with Indian attire at convocations
NEW DELHI, Jun 02, 2016, DHNS

An RSS-backed organisation wants students of higher educational institutions to attend convocations in traditional attire, instead of the British-era ceremonial gowns.
Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas secretary Atul Kothari said Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh had recently written to the vice-chancellors of universities in the state, asking them to ensure that students participate in convocations wearing Indian attire like dhoti kurta and kurta pajama for men and sari for women.
Letter to governorsA resolution for the same was passed at a three-day event inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat, Kothari said. “We are going to write to the governors of other states and urge them to issue a similar directive to the universities functioning under them. We will write separate letters to state education ministers and directors of technical institutes, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs),” Kothari added.
He, however, remained non-committal on whether men could attend convocations wearing trousers and shirts.
“Trousers and shirts are not Indian attire. They came from the West, though adopted in India,” he said.
Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas is a right-wing organisation of education activists, founded by former RSS pracharak Dinanath Batra. Batra, a retired teacher, was full-time general secretary of the RSS schools’ network Vidya Bharati.
It recently organised a conference on education in association with some universities in Ropar district of Haryana.
