Amid contesting claims on emissions from mobile towers, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday sought a report from the Centre on erecting such structures on residences.
Secretaries of the Ministry of Health, and Communications & Information Technology have been asked to submit their reports in two weeks, an NHRC spokesperson said.

The notice came following the NHRC considering a complaint against erecting mobile towers in the close vicinity of residential areas. The complainant claimed that these towers are emitting hazardous radiations.

There is a deep divide over the effect of mobile towers on health with one section claiming that it could even cause cancer.

While issuing notices, the NHRC observed that it cannot be denied that today’s generation is living amongst mobile towers, digital cables, mobiles etc. The virtual world has encompassed every aspect of human life.

“In such a scenario, if the allegations levelled in the complaint are true, the right to health and right to life of a common man is under serious threat. The government should adopt strategies which ensure that development is done without causing any substantive damage to the life and health of human beings and other living things,” the NHRC said.

Citing various studies, the complainant told NHRC that radiation is a threat to man’s health and life.

He has also referred to a government order dated August 21, 2013, which stated that the local self-government institutions should confirm that the mobile towers are not present within 500 metres of schools and hospitals. He said that the order did not cover residential buildings.

“The mobile operators are violating safe radiation range and are erecting towers in thickly populated residential areas thereby exposing people to electromagnetic radiation. They tempt land owners by quoting fabulous prices for erecting the mobile towers,” the complainant said.
