Money pangs does not deter this Assam college topper

The adage, “Aim high and you will eventually get it,” fits Ankurjyoti Bora, a student from Ramanujan Junior College of Nagaon in Central Assam, like a glove. He has bagged the top rank in the Science stream in the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council final examination, through sheer grit and determination.
Apart from his hard work, what makes Ankurjyoti’s success story more inspiring is his financial struggle throughout his student life.

The sole bread earner of the family, Ankur’s father Ramesh Bora, an electrician in the small village of Rahachaki in Nagaon, met a tragic death while on duty. At that time Ankurjyoti was barely 12 years old.

His sister, Juri Bora, after somehow completing her graduation started taking tuitions in the village to support the family. In 2014, Ankurjyoti passed the HSLC Examination with distinction, missing a rank by only three marks.

Ankurjyoti managed to catch the eye of Dilip Bora, principal of Ramanujan Junior College of Nagaon, who arranged free education for him for two years. The effort of the college and hard work of Ankujyoti paid off on Thursday when the HSEC examination results were announced.

“I used to cycle to Raha Chariali and then catch a bus to college. I used to study for 9-10 hours. I did not have the means to go for private tuitions. My sister is sacrificing a lot. She runs the family with the tuition money she earns and also bears my expenses,” said Ankurjyoti Bora, who wants to become an engineer.
