'Jungle raj' in city: Kejri

NEW DELHI, June 7, 2016, DHNS:
Arvind Kejriwal

An angry Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday that there was “jungle raj” in the city as reflected in the spurt in crime against children and women.

The AAP leader put the blame for the deteriorating law and order situation in the city on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung who controls the Delhi Police.

Pointing at crimes like an infant’s rape and a triple murder highlighted in the social media, the chief minister tweeted: “Complete jungle raj in Del. LG/Modiji failed miserably. What hv they done to control deteriorating law n order? (sic)”

“This is 2 years of Modi raj,” he said. “LG sahib/Modi ji, pl do something,” he tweeted. As part of his campaign for full statehood for Delhi, the Kejriwal government has been demanding control over the Delhi Police and greater accountability of men of khaki towards the elected government – an issue which the Centre claims cannot be settled due to lack of consensus among all stakeholders.

City Home Minister Satyendar Jain also raised the demand for giving the Delhi government control over the Delhi Police for better crime control.

Chandni Chowk legislator Alka Lamba joined Kejriwal in Centre-bashing and demanded that the Delhi Police be split into two forces – one for the New Delhi area and controlled by the Centre and the other for the rest of the city and controlled by the Delhi government.

“Till when will the Centre continue to control th Delhi Police in the name of VVIP security. All this is happening at the cost of exposing common people to threats. A common man does not need a Z category security but just a constable,” she said in a tweet.

She justified her suggestion to split Delhi Police, claiming that such division of jurisdiction already existed among civic agencies – New Delhi Municipal Council for VVIP areas and Municipal Corporation of Delhi or the rest.

BJP’s leader of opposition Vijender Gupta hit out at Kejriwal, saying that chief ministers like him, who threatened to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations in 2014, cannot be given control of law and order.

“How can we trust a chief minister and give control over the police when he himself tried to challenge the law of the land,” said Gupta.Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal, an AAP leader, also highlighted cases of crime.

“Horrific appalling murders of 9 and 19 yr old daughters & 50 yr old mother. Crime against women rise in Delhi. Still no High Level Committee,” she tweeted.

The renewed push by the AAP government to control Delhi Police comes close to the public debate initiated by Kejriwal last month on giving Delhi full statehood.

He had released a draft of The State of Delhi Bill, 2016 in his bid to seek greater control over police, bureaucrats and land issues in areas outside the New Delhi Municipal Council jurisdiction in central Delhi.
