The Parliament deadlock continued on Friday with the Opposition insisting on a debate on demonetisation under a rule that entails voting, and the government demanding an apology from Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad for his controversial remarks.

Similar scenes were witnessed for the second day with Congress-led Opposition rushing into the Well, demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in the Rajya Sabha during the debate and insisting on voting after discussion in the Lok Sabha.

In the Lok Sabha, the Congress and some other parties were adamant that the debate be held through adjournment motion which means suspension of all business and entails voting. However, government was not inclined to this demand.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected several notices given by opposition leaders for discussion under the adjournment motion. Soon after the Lok Sabha met,  Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge made the demand for a discussion through adjournment motion.Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government was willing to discuss the issue and there was no need to press for an adjournment motion.

Amid the din, the House was adjourned for nearly one hour till noon but when it reassembled, the opposition persisted with the demand.

Kumar said discussion could be taken up under Rule 193, which does not entail voting and a formal motion.
