Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday reacted bitterly to protests and criticism by Opposition parties that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not made any announcement on special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
Leader of the Opposition Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had alleged that Mr. Naidu had secured a reprieve for himself in the cash-for-votes scam in return for not insisting on a package for the State from the Prime Minister.
The CPI and the CPI(M) targeted both the Union and State governments. In Kurnool district, CPI(M) workers staged a protest in front of the Collector’s office against both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, accusing them of being indifferent to the popular demand for special category status to the State.
Decries outcry against Centre
Mr. Naidu said political parties not interested in the construction of the Capital, those who divided the State against the sentiments of the people and those who have vested interests in stalling development, are making a hue and cry over the Centre not granting special status to the State.
Addressing a press conference in Vijayawada, he said there were even suggestions to sever ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The CM said the State should make the best use of opportunities. “I’m not on an ego trip. Why should I put people to trouble for the “hidden agenda” of a few people,” he asked.
According to him, the State government was leaving no stone unturned in achieving the set targets. The Centre was also extending all possible help. A presentation was made before the Prime Minister. The NITI Aayog was asked to prepare a road map. It would submit its report in 10 to 15 days. “We will meet the Prime Minister again shortly in this regard,” he said.
