Cold wave continues to sweep Kashmir

An intense cold wave continued to sweep Kashmir on Friday as Kargil town in Ladakh region recorded a minimum temperature of minus 9.5 degrees.
A MeT department official said Srinagar recorded an improvement of 0.2 degrees in the night temperature, with the mercury settling at a low of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, as compared to previous night’s minus 2.7 degrees.
He said the minimum temperature in the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius against minus 0.6 degrees the previous night, while the night temperature in Pahalgam, the tourist resort in south Kashmir, settled at minus 4.2 degrees.
Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, which is same as the previous night. Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 2.7 degrees Celsius, against minus 2.3 degrees the previous night.
Leh town recorded a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, as the cold wave has hit the region owing to a prolonged dry spell, he said. “Cold wave conditions are likely to continue for the next two days as the weather is expected to remain dry with cloudless night skies,” the official added.
