Top Naga leader Konyak joins NSCN(I-M)

Guwahati, Mar 13, 2016, DHNS:

The NSCN(I-M) which signed a framework agreement for peace with the Centre last year got a shot in the arm  on Sunday when the NSCN(Khole-Kitovi) chairman Khole Konyak joined the Th Muivah and Isak Chisi Swu led NSCN(I-M).

Khole has acceptability across different Naga tribes and his joining the NSCN(I-M) will give more legitimacy to the peace process.

Konyak in a statement said he had “taken the right decision” in joining the NSCN (I-M) and “in good faith” accepted and acknowledged the leadership of Isak Chishi Swu and Th Muivah.

Manwhile, NSCN(K-K) commander-in-chief Noakpao Konyak has been appointed as the new chairman of the outfit which also has a ceasefire deal with the Centre. He had vehemently opposed the framework agreement and recently got other Naga underground groups to sign a joint memorandum disowning it.

“The present Indo-Naga talks is the only acceptable foundation for our nation’s survival and I was fully convinced that the NSCN (I-M) was the only organisation of the Nagas. It is a fact to be acknowledged that the NSCN is the authentic organisation of the Naga people recognised by many countries, including the Government of India,” Konyak added in the press release.

While repeated attempt from Deccan Herald could not yield any response from NSCN(K-K), observers believe this is a major development. Khole was once the commander-in-chief of the NSCN faction led by S S Khaplang. Konyak along with his general secretary Kitovi Zhimomi had later parted ways from Khaplang and formed the NSCN(K-K) and entered into a ceasefire with the Centre.
